Exterior paint is too cold to apply when the air, surface, or material falls outside the limits on that product’s current data sheet. A warm afternoon reading alone is not enough if the wall is colder or the temperature will drop during the coating’s early drying period.

Start with the exact product

Different coatings can have different temperature limits. Product family, sheen, substrate, and application method can all matter. Find the manufacturer and product number on the can or proposal, then read the current technical data sheet instead of relying on a generic internet temperature.

Kwelby ships with one transparent example rule: Sherwin-Williams Duration Exterior Acrylic Satin, K33 series. The linked sheet says the air, surface, and material should be above 35°F at application and that air or surface temperature should not fall below 35°F for 48 hours after application. That number belongs to that cited product; it is not a rule for every paint.

Air temperature is not surface temperature

A wall can be cooler or warmer than the air around it. Shade, wind, sun, building materials, and stored heat all affect the surface. A forecast is a useful planning input, while an on-site surface reading is the check that applies to the wall.

Planning sequenceProduct minimum → hourly forecast → coldest follow-up hour → on-site surface check

Why the overnight low belongs in the decision

The temperature at noon may look comfortable while the overnight low falls below the product’s required range. Review the entire period named by the manufacturer, not only the planned painting hours. A later start can also shorten the time available before the evening drop.

Kwelby checks the hourly NWS forecast around the jobsite and shows the rule behind the result. The public checker is free for homeowners and painting crews.

Questions a homeowner can ask

  • Which exact coating and data sheet are you using?
  • Does the stated minimum apply to the air, the surface, and the paint?
  • How long after application must the temperature remain within range?
  • How will the crew measure the surface at the property?

A weather delay is not automatically a sign of poor planning. A documented delay can show that the crew is following the product requirements rather than forcing a marginal application window.

Sources and limits

This guide uses the Sherwin-Williams Duration Exterior Acrylic Satin product data sheet as a named example and the National Weather Service API documentation for forecast provenance. Product instructions can change; read the current sheet for the coating in hand. A forecast is not a measurement of a particular wall.
