For a repaint estimator assessing older aluminum lap siding after washing, no fixed number of dry hours clears the finish-coat date. Verify that chalk and cleaner are removed, laps and seams are dry after washing or morning dew, and the specified system meets its field and forecast limits. For a large expanse specified in Sherwin-Williams Duration Exterior Acrylic Satin, the current sheet requires air, surface, and material at 50°F or higher; its general 35°F minimum does not clear that metal wall.
Separate the adhesion hold from the weather hold
Old factory-finished aluminum can transfer powder even when it looks clean. Diamond Vogel's bulletin recommends a hand check for chalk transfer after cleaning and removal of chalk before painting. Valspar's chalking guidance also calls for removing powder and drying the surface before priming or painting. These preparation principles do not approve a particular primer substitution.
Washing water may remain at lap undersides, seams, fasteners, and shaded returns after the face looks dry. Morning dew can wet them again. A forecast helps reserve a crew date, but the crew must inspect those details at the property. Remaining chalk or moisture is a hold even when the air is warm.
Read the metal-siding exception on the exact sheet
The March 2026 Duration Exterior Acrylic Satin K33-Series sheet includes properly prepared aluminum siding, but requires air, surface, and material at least 50°F on large expanses of metal siding. Its general application section requires those three at least 5°F above the dew point, cautions against rain or snow expected within 2–3 hours, and says air or surface temperature must not drop below 35°F within 48 hours. These figures belong to this finish coat and do not override a primer's instructions.
The sheet calls for washing off oil, grease, and other contamination and abrading away corrosion. If washing exposes bare metal, failed factory finish, or persistent chalk, obtain a compatible preparation and primer decision from the specified system. Record the exact can, sheen, and current sheet; a primer may have a stricter limit.
A wash-to-repaint sign-off sequence
- Map the wall.Record the large metal-siding elevation, shaded seams, oxidized panels, and bare or corroded spots separately.
- Check the wash.Once dry, rub representative panels for chalk transfer. Reclean where powder or detergent remains; record the outcome before covering it.
- Check slow details.Inspect lap undersides, seams, and shaded returns after washing and dew. Use the system's required dryness method.
- Match the system.Confirm finish and primer, read each current sheet, and measure air, panel, material, and dew-point conditions at the wall.
- Release or reschedule.Review the hourly forecast through the follow-up period. Save readings, prep result, sheet links, crew date, and client explanation with the job.
Limits of the sign-off
A hand rub screens for chalk; it cannot guarantee adhesion. Existing coating condition and manufacturer-required tests still matter. An address forecast cannot measure hidden lap moisture. For wider context, see the after-rain guide and the product-limit guide.

Check the address free →The answer
Washed aluminum is ready only when chalk and moisture checks pass, the system is confirmed, and measured site conditions meet its rules. For large expanses under the cited Duration Satin sheet, 50°F applies to air, surface, and material. A dry-looking wall or generic 35°F headline cannot replace that sign-off.
