Do not prime the freshly cut bottom edge of a Waterloo plywood siding repair just because October 1 rain has stopped. Inspect the installed panel's edge, grooves, back and flashing detail; release the primer only when the wood is sound and dry and the chosen primer's air, surface, material and follow-up weather rules can be met. Photograph a swollen or separating edge and route it for panel repair rather than painting over it.

What the October 1 report changes

The NWS Des Moines 8 a.m. CDT Iowa roundup on October 1, 2026 listed light rain at Waterloo. That is a dated local signal to revisit a scheduled siding repair, not proof that every Waterloo panel was wetted. A roof overhang, splashback, wind direction and exposed cut can leave adjacent edges in different conditions. Save the address forecast and observation time, then inspect this panel.

The narrow job here is a field-cut lower edge on a plywood grooved siding repair, not an entire wall repaint. APA explains that true T1-11 is an APA 303 plywood product and that cuts made after factory edge sealing need resealing. Verify the stamp and panel maker; do not treat an OSB-lookalike or an already delaminated panel as sound plywood.

Check whether the edge is a coating job at all

Look at the bottom edge from below where safe. Open plies, raised veneer, soft wood, a wet back or standing water at the trim make this a repair and drainage decision before it is a primer decision. Inspect the gap and flashing above any lower trim; a coating cannot correct water trapped by the assembly. Record a close photograph of the cut, its face and the water path. Avoid sealing a visibly damp edge simply to meet a schedule.

If the edge remains firm and dry after the rain, clean it as the panel and coating makers require. APA's edge-sealing instruction addresses moisture movement at cuts; it does not give a universal waiting period after rain. Judge readiness at the wood, not by a fixed number of sunny hours.

Match the actual primer and finish sheets

For a named example, the Sherwin-Williams Exterior Latex Wood Primer B42W08041 sheet names plywood siding. Its application instructions require air, surface and material above 35°F and at least 5°F above dew point; avoid use if rain or snow is expected within two to three hours, and keep air and surface above 35°F for 48 hours afterward. At 77°F and 50% relative humidity its listed recoat is four hours, while the sheet lists 24 to 48 hours at 35°F. Humidity, film build and temperature change drying. Exterior primer exposure must be topcoated within 14 days under this sheet. These numbers belong only to B42W08041; the actual topcoat has its own requirements.

Do not use this latex wood primer as a stain-blocking answer on knotty or extractive-rich wood without following its test instructions. Confirm whether the repaired panel is compatible, how the edge should be sealed, and whether the specified finish can follow before promising one crew visit.

Waterloo crew sequence

  1. Record the trigger.Save the October 1 observation and current address forecast. Note that station rain is not a site moisture reading.
  2. Identify and inspect.Record the panel stamp, cut location, exposed plies, groove bottoms and nearby trim or flashing. Escalate softness, swelling or water entry.
  3. Verify drying.Check the face, cut edge and accessible back using suitable field methods and the panel maker's guidance. Log conditions and photos before primer release.
  4. Check the system.Read the current primer and finish sheets for the actual cans. Measure air, panel surface and material conditions; compare the next rain, dew and overnight period.
  5. Tell the client the decision.Record primer release or a hold, the reason, and the next inspection time in the job brief. Keep panel repair separate from cosmetic coating scope.

Forecast and station limits

Kwelby cannot see behind trim, test plywood moisture remotely or certify an edge seal. A dry forecast does not undo swelling or failed flashing. For planning, use the free address checker; keep readings and repair photos in the crew job and client brief. Kwelby's method explains the forecast boundary. The after-rain guide covers general drying questions, and the forecast guide helps choose a reinspection window. This page decides the cut-edge repair.

Release only a sound, dry cut

For the Waterloo job, reschedule primer if the bottom edge or back is damp, swollen or compromised. Once the panel and water detail are sound, record the measured conditions and apply the specified edge primer and finish within their own instructions.

Sources and limits

Current trigger: NWS Des Moines Iowa surface observations, 8 a.m. CDT October 1, 2026, reported light rain at Waterloo. This station report does not establish rainfall or panel moisture at a particular address. Assembly: APA Rated Siding guidance on resealing field-cut edges and distinguishing actual T1-11 plywood from generic grooved panels. Named coating example: Sherwin-Williams Exterior Latex Wood Primer B42W08041 product data sheet, November 2019; recheck the current sheet and actual finish before work.
