To read a forecast for painting, skip the daily summary and look at the hourly forecast for your address across the entire window the paint needs: the hours you apply it and the hours afterwards. Check temperature, dew point, and the chance of rain hour by hour, and understand that a rain percentage is a probability, not a schedule.
Use the hourly forecast, not the daily icon
A daily forecast compresses a whole day into a high, a low, and one icon. Paint does not experience the day that way. A pleasant high can hide a cold night, and a sunny icon can hide a storm at four in the afternoon. The hourly forecast shows when conditions change, which is exactly what a painting decision depends on.
What “40% chance of rain” actually means
The National Weather Service defines the probability of precipitation as the chance that a given forecast point will receive at least 0.01 inch of rain during the period. A 40% chance does not mean it will rain for 40% of the day, or over 40% of the area. It means there is a 40 in 100 chance of measurable rain at that location during that time.
Read the whole painting window
The start time is only the beginning. Many product sheets name conditions that must hold for a period after application, such as a minimum temperature or a dry spell. - Temperature, hour by hour.Find the coldest and hottest hours in the window, not just the high.
- Dew point.Compare it with temperature. A narrowing gap signals moisture; see our guide to painting when it is humid.
- Chance of rain.Scan every hour through the drying period, not only the start.
- The forecast wording.Phrases like “chance of showers” flag rain risk even when the percentage looks low.
How far ahead to trust a forecast
Forecasts are generally more reliable for the next day or two than for a week or more ahead, and uncertainty grows the further out you look. Use a longer-range forecast to shortlist promising days, then recheck the day before and again the morning of the job. Plan a buffer day so a changed forecast does not push you into a marginal start.
Your street, not just your city
A city-wide forecast can miss what is happening at your property. The National Weather Service produces forecasts on a grid, so the forecast for your address can differ from one a few miles away. Even then, a forecast describes the air in an area. It cannot measure the temperature of a sunlit wall or spot dew on shaded trim, so a check on site still matters.
