For a homeowner or deck crew staining a washed pressure-treated top rail after overnight dew, do not use elapsed hours or a “damp wood” claim as the go-ahead. Match the can to the SuperDeck SD7-251 sheet: it calls for clean, dry wood, ideally 15% moisture or less for optimal performance, and no rain or snow expected within 24 hours after application. Check rail tops, cut ends, and shaded joints on site, then schedule the coat only if the whole sequence clears.
Which SuperDeck is on the rail?
“SuperDeck” names several stains. The SD7-251 solid color sheet specifically lists pressure-treated wood and rails. It says all surfaces must be clean, dry, dull, and free of contamination; it also calls for coating cut ends and joints thoroughly. The same manufacturer’s product page uses broader damp-wood language. For this can and this job, follow the exact data sheet and ask Sherwin-Williams to resolve any apparent conflict before applying to damp wood.
The sheet gives a target wood moisture of 15% or less for optimal performance, requires air, surface, and material above 35°F and at least 5°F above dew point, and says not to apply when rain or snow is expected within 24 hours. It recommends shade and a 50–90°F surface range for best results. Those figures belong to SD7-251, not every deck stain.
Why top rails need a separate sign-off
A horizontal cap collects wash water and morning dew; end grain, joints, and the underside around posts may dry at different rates. One dry floor board does not clear the rail. After washing, remove cleaner residue and check the actual wood and any remaining sealed or previously coated areas. The SD7-251 preparation section warns against coating sealed or previously coated surfaces, so a sound-looking old film still needs a product-specific preparation decision.
A rail-by-rail decision sequence
- Match product and substrate.Record the can, sheet version, pressure-treated wood type if known, and each rail or section that will be stained.
- Check prep and moisture.Inspect top faces, cut ends, post joints, and shade after washing and dew. Use an appropriate wood moisture method; do not infer dry core wood from a dry-looking face.
- Review weather at the job.Use the hourly address forecast to plan application and the following 24 hours. Measure air, rail surface, material, and dew-point conditions before starting.
- Make a section decision.Hold damp or previously sealed rails for further prep. Stain only sections that meet the matched sheet, and record the readings and next check for held sections.
- Plan the second coat and use.The sheet's recoat and use times depend on temperature, humidity, and film thickness. Keep traffic off the rail until the actual coat has reached the required condition.
A forecast cannot certify the wood
Kwelby can document the forecast, product rule, and schedule choice. It cannot measure wood moisture, tell whether a cleaner was rinsed, or assess old stain adhesion. Those need field checks. For the wider moisture question, read the after-rain guide and the overnight drying guide.
Check the address for a likely weather window, then save the rail moisture result, SD7-251 rule, and new stain date in the job brief.
Check the address free →Stain the washed top rail only after the exact product sheet, dry wood checks, measured site conditions, and following weather window agree. If dew rewets a section, hold that section and recheck it.
