The dew point is the temperature at which air becomes saturated enough for condensation to form. If a surface cools toward that point, moisture can collect on it even when no rain appears in the forecast.
What painters mean by the dew-point gap
The “gap” is the difference between temperature and dew point. A larger gap generally means the air is farther from saturation; a narrowing gap deserves attention. The coating manufacturer may specify how far the air, surface, and material must remain above the dew point.
For Kwelby’s shipped example, the Sherwin-Williams Duration Exterior Acrylic Satin data sheet calls for air, surface, and material temperatures at least 5°F above the dew point. Use the requirement on the exact product selected for your job.
Why mornings and evenings can be tricky
Overnight cooling can bring a wall close to the dew point and leave dew behind in the morning. Later in the day, the air temperature may rise enough to widen the gap, while shaded areas take longer to dry. Toward evening, the gap can narrow again as temperature falls.
Forecast reading versus wall reading
The National Weather Service forecast provides conditions for an area and time. It does not measure your siding, stucco, trim, or deck. The crew still needs to inspect the surface and take the measurements required by the coating instructions.
