Do not touch up a rain-wet scratch on a factory-finished PVDF metal roof with general exterior paint. First arrange safe roof access, identify the panel supplier and factory finish, photograph the scratch and nearby seams, and check whether the mark is a small finish blemish or broader panel damage. Ask the supplier to approve the repair system. A small, clean, dry defect may be eligible for a matched field touch-up; extensive damage, a failed seam or uncertain warranty scope needs a separate roof-panel decision.
Is this a finish mark or a roof assembly defect?
For a property manager reviewing a post-rain maintenance ticket, record panel identity, finish code, scratch length and width, whether the damage appears to reach metal, and whether it lies near a fastener, seam or penetration. Photograph the same area from a safe vantage after it is dry. Water entry, a loose panel, a cut edge or a dent is a roofing-system question; do not promise that paint restores watertightness. Keep any active leak and roof access under a qualified roofing contractor's scope.
Why factory PVDF changes the paint decision
The Metal Construction Association describes air-dry touch-up for small blemishes on factory-coated panels and recommends consulting the panel supplier before selecting it; it also notes that replacement can be the better choice. ATAS's panel guidance confines its minor repair method to a clean affected area and a fine applicator, warns that field touch-up can fade faster than the factory finish, and points extensive damage toward replacement. ATAS instructions apply to ATAS products; they are an inspection model for an unknown roof, not a substitute for its supplier's directions.
Do not confuse a factory-baked finish with a field coating or assume all metal roofs are PVDF. Confirm whether the actual system is PVDF, another factory finish or a prior site-applied repaint. MBCI cautions for its own panels that major field repainting can affect its finish warranty and that touch-up may weather differently. Get the installed supplier's warranty and approval in writing before treating an aesthetic scratch as a full-panel repaint.
A post-rain work-order sequence
- Hold the wet roof.Use the rain forecast to plan inspection, then let the qualified roofer verify safe access and dry conditions on the panel. No forecast establishes that a seam or scratch is dry.
- Map the damage.Photograph each mark with a scale and location. Separate light surface marks, exposed-metal gouges, broad abrasions, leaks and displaced panels.
- Identify the system.Find submittals, supplier, panel finish and warranty. Send the photos and damage map to the supplier for the exact current touch-up instructions or replacement recommendation.
- Price the right scope.Record a supplier-approved small touch-up separately from extensive-panel replacement or roofing repair. Keep color-match expectations and warranty status explicit in the client proof.
- Close the record.Attach the supplier response, dry-surface check, chosen product instructions and completion photos to Kwelby's crew job record.
What the checker and a photograph cannot approve
The free checker can flag another rain window; it cannot diagnose coating depth, roof leaks, safe access or panel identity. Kwelby's sourced method keeps that distinction visible. The powder-coated railing guide uses a different assembly and matching system; the lap-siding flashing guide illustrates why a water-path defect must be resolved before a cosmetic finish.
Touch up only a supplier-approved small mark
After rain, wait for safe access and a dry panel, then make the finish decision from the actual panel specification and damage map. A small approved blemish may take a carefully confined repair. An extensive scratch, leak or unverified factory finish belongs in a replacement or specialist assessment, not a general paint bid.
