Wait for a newly installed, primer-finished BILCO Classic steel cellar door to be dry at the leaf seams, underside and frame after overnight dew before applying exterior alkyd metal enamel. Confirm the door is the primer version, repair any damaged primer, and plan two thin coats on both sides. BILCO's 45-day finish requirement makes the next inspection date important, but a deadline does not authorize painting over condensation.

Check which BILCO door was installed

BILCO's Classic Series instructions distinguish primer-finished doors from factory powder-coated doors. The primer version must be painted within 45 days of installation with an exterior alkyd-base enamel; BILCO calls for one thin coat followed by a second on exterior and interior primed steel. The powder-coated version needs no additional finish. Save the model, installation date and finish label before ordering paint or giving the homeowner a completion date.

A sloped leaf may look dry on top while water remains against its seam, frame flange or underside hardware. Inspect the protected primer for scratches, rust and grime. BILCO's installation FAQ directs sanding a scratch and using an oil-base primer designed for metal before coating the whole door with exterior alkyd metal enamel. If the factory primer is extensively damaged, ask BILCO and the coating maker for a repair system; do not treat a topcoat as a rust repair.

A product sheet is a separate gate

As an example to evaluate, the July 2025 Sherwin-Williams B54-150 urethane alkyd sheet lists exterior steel doors and previously painted, properly prepared surfaces. For that series it specifies air, surface and material temperatures from 40°F to 120°F, at least 5°F above dew point and relative humidity no higher than 85%. Its 18-hour recoat example is at 77°F and 50% humidity; at 45°F the example is 36 hours. Those values are product-specific and do not establish compatibility with every BILCO factory primer. Confirm actual can, local availability, primer compatibility and current revision with the manufacturers.

Compare the measured steel temperature at shaded seams with the air and dew point immediately before coating, and recheck as evening approaches. The sheet says to clean contamination and allow drying; it also recommends stripe coating crevices, welds and sharp angles. Keep the door operable and protected according to the chosen system's drying instructions. Do not infer that a touch-dry face is ready for closing against a seal or for the next coat.

Owner and crew decision sequence

  1. Identify and date.Photograph the Classic door label, factory finish and installation date; calculate the BILCO finish deadline.
  2. Inspect dew traps.Check leaf seams, underside, frame and scratches after overnight condensation clears; record any rust or water route.
  3. Confirm the system.Match the current alkyd enamel sheet to the BILCO primer and the repair primer; resolve compatibility before purchase.
  4. Measure and schedule.Record steel, air and material readings, dew point and humidity, then reserve the actual first- and second-coat interval.
  5. Keep proof.Save product IDs, photos, readings and the next inspection or completion time in the Kwelby job record.

The deadline does not dry the seam

The free checker can help plan a weather window; it cannot identify the door finish or measure water under a leaf. Kwelby's method requires the on-site check. The steel lintel guide covers rusty load-bearing steel after rain, while the galvanized railing guide covers a primed railing before a storm; neither substitutes for BILCO's factory-primer instructions.

Finish the correct door on a dry schedule

For a primer-finished Classic cellar door, document the 45-day requirement, inspect dew-prone details, obtain a compatible exterior alkyd metal system and reserve both coats. If the measured window fails, record a hold and the next check rather than burying moisture under enamel.
