Do not reglaze an exposed Bangor wood sash while September 29 rain persists, or treat Wednesday sun as automatic clearance. DAP 33 Window Glazing requires clean, dry, frost-free surfaces, excludes damp or rainy application and rain forecast within 24 hours, and calls for an oil-primed wood sash. Inspect the actual rabbet and forecast before scheduling glazing. Put repainting on a separate visit after the compound reaches a firm set.
Why this week's forecast changes the sash job
The NWS Bangor forecast viewed September 29 showed rain likely followed by showers Tuesday and a drier Wednesday. That shift can help reserve an inspection, but it does not establish when a shaded wood rabbet or old back bedding dries. A window in a sheltered north wall can retain moisture after the nearby street looks dry. Recheck the point forecast at dispatch and the sash at the property.
This is a reglazing decision for a single-glazed wood sash with DAP 33, not a general exterior-paint rain rule. Broken glass, a loose sash, rotten rabbets or suspected lead paint change the scope and may require a qualified window or lead-safe contractor before coating work.
DAP 33 has two different release dates
The DAP 33 technical sheet says not to apply below 40°F or above 90°F air or sash temperature, during damp or rainy weather, or when rain is forecast within 24 hours. For wood sash it requires an oil-based primer that has dried. These are conditions for this glazing compound, not a universal window-putty or paint rule. Check the current label and sheet for the container in hand.
The same sheet says paint only after the glazing has skinned and attained a firm set, demonstrated by a light touch leaving no fingerprint. It says this may happen in as little as seven days but is more likely after two to three weeks; conditions and fill volume matter. An exterior acrylic-latex finish requires an oil-based primer on the glazing first. The paint line must overlap the glass and bedding joint as specified. Therefore a dry Wednesday does not imply a Wednesday or Friday paint handoff.
A field sequence before giving the client a date
- Identify the assembly.Confirm single-glazed wood sash, glass size and condition, existing bedding, and whether a sash specialist must repair or remove it. DAP 33 excludes some glass and panel assemblies; do not assume every window fits.
- Record the weather check.Save the Bangor point forecast time and inspect the next 24 hours for rain. Compare measured air and sash temperatures with the exact sheet; area air forecasts are not sash readings.
- Release the prepared rabbet.Remove failed glazing and bedding as the sheet directs, resolve unsound wood, confirm a clean dry surface, and verify that the specified oil-based wood primer is dry. A surface that merely looks lighter after rain is not proof.
- Glaze to the approved detail.Follow DAP's bedding, point or clip, and tooled-slope instructions. Keep glass secure by its specified mechanical retainers, not by expecting fresh putty to hold it.
- Book paint after inspection.Record application date and conditions, protect the sash, then check actual firm set. Confirm the paint system and primer compatibility before scheduling the finishing crew or promising operation to the occupant.
What Kwelby can document
The free forecast check can help identify possible rain-free hours. It cannot measure water in the rabbet, prove primer dryness, verify glazing firm set or certify glass safety. Keep the glazing hold, source sheet, field readings and proposed revisit in the crew job record and client brief. Kwelby's method explains the forecast and field-check boundary.
Use the free address checker for a refreshed planning window. The after-rain painting guide explains why a dry surface matters, and the overnight drying guide helps plan the later finish. Neither replaces the DAP 33 glazing sheet.
Give two dates, each conditional
For the Bangor sash, hold glazing until the rain restriction, actual sash dryness and preparation are satisfied. Record a separate painting decision after the compound reaches a firm set and the selected primer and finish requirements are checked. Tell the client when each inspection will occur rather than promising that the first dry forecast day completes the window.
Sources and limits
Current trigger: NWS Bangor point forecast viewed September 29, 2026, showing Tuesday rain likely then showers and a drier Wednesday. Exact material: DAP 33 Window Glazing technical data sheet, August 2018 revision linked from DAP’s current product page. The dated forecast is planning evidence; the crew must match the actual container, inspect the sash and confirm a refreshed forecast before work.
