Do not repaint a peeling wood sectional garage door bottom rail immediately after rain. First identify whether water is entering at the lower edge, a panel slot or failed weather seal, and whether the wood or hardware attachment has softened. Let the entire bottom detail dry and verify it on site. Then follow the identified door maker’s primer and exterior finish instructions for all exposed faces and edges, not just the visible front strip.
The bottom rail is a different failure from face fading
For a homeowner and repaint estimator, the durable question is whether the lower section needs coating or door repair. Overhead Door’s wood-door guidelines identify the bottom section as a common path for moisture wicking from below or pooling on a horizontal member. DASMA likewise calls for inspecting bottom sections and hardware attachment. Peeling that repeats after rain, swelling, softness, staining or a loose lower bracket merits diagnosis before scraping. A paint film cannot restore compromised wood or a misaligned door.
Check the threshold drainage, bottom sweep, outside corners, panel-to-rail slots and back of the lower section. Record where water persists after the front face dries. If hardware, springs, tracks or the opener bind, stop door operation and refer that scope to a trained door-systems technician; a painting crew should not adjust safety hardware.
Use the actual wood-door finishing system
For the Wayne Dalton wood-door example hosted by Overhead Door, the instructions call for primer compatible with the selected finish and wood species, then two coats of high-quality exterior 100% acrylic latex finish on both faces and all edges. Factory-primed sections may need primer touch-up where sanding exposes wood. The document also directs paintable exterior caulk at specified rail, stile and panel joints after priming and before finish. Confirm the specific model and current instructions; another door may use a different joint detail or factory finish.
New wood sections have a separate pre-installation six-sided finishing requirement in that document. A maintenance repaint of an installed door cannot automatically recreate access to every concealed edge. If a lower edge is inaccessible, bare or persistently wet, record the limitation and ask the door maker or installer whether section removal or replacement is needed. Avoid coating the flexible sweep, safety labels or moving hardware.
Rain ending is only the start of drying
Check the forecast for rain, overnight dew and the finish system’s actual application and recoat window, then inspect the lower rail, rear face and panel slots at the property. A dry-looking front does not prove the wood behind the sweep is dry. Use the current primer, caulk and finish data sheets for any numeric temperature, moisture, rain or recoat limits; the door-maker guidance does not provide one universal number. Photograph any retained moisture and set a return inspection rather than inventing a fixed number of dry days.
A bottom-section repaint decision
- Identify the door.Record maker, model, wood species if known, factory primer or old finish, installation state and prior repair.
- Map the water path.Inspect sweep, sill drainage, horizontal rail, panel slots, inside face and both corners after rain. Photograph peeling and any swelling.
- Separate paint from repair.Probe only as appropriate without damaging the door; refer soft wood, unsafe attachments and moving hardware for door-system assessment.
- Release a dry system. When sound and dry, prepare failed film, match primer and two-coat exterior finish to the door instructions, and follow each current product sheet.
- Record access and return.Agree on garage access while coatings dry, keep the sweep and hardware clear, and save photos, products and the decision in the Kwelby crew job record.
A weather check cannot certify the door
Kwelby’s free checker can help schedule the inspection, and the method page explains why the site check remains necessary. The steel garage-door guide treats paint blocking against vinyl; this wood-door problem is bottom-edge water entry. The general after-rain guide supplies the wider drying principle, not a clearance for this rail.
Repair the cause before the coat
Repaint only after water entry and structural concerns are resolved, the entire lower detail is dry, and the identified door and coating makers’ instructions fit the job. If the edge cannot be inspected or finished properly, document the limitation and obtain a section-level repair plan before promising a cosmetic repaint.
