When can you actually paint outside?

The coldest hour after painting matters.

The product sheet says the air, surface, and material must be above 35°F (1.7°C) at application and that air or surface temperatures must not drop below 35°F in the following 48 hours. A forecast that looks good from 10 am to 3 pm can still be a poor painting window if the next night turns cold.

Leave room above the dew point.

For this product, the sheet calls for air, surface, and material temperatures at least 5°F (about 2.8°C) above the dew point before painting. When the temperature approaches the dew point, moisture can form on a surface even without rain.

Kwelby compares forecast air temperature with forecast dew point during the work window. The crew must still measure the surface and make sure it is dry.

Give the new coat a dry start.

The sheet says to avoid application if rain or snow is expected within two to three hours. Kwelby checks for forecast precipitation during a four-hour application block and for three hours after it ends. It treats a 40% or higher precipitation probability as a reason to review the forecast again; that 40% threshold is a cautious planning choice, not a manufacturer specification.

The field check stays with the crew.

There is no forecast-only “go” signal. Surface and material temperatures, substrate dryness, prep, direct sun, wind, and changing local conditions can all alter the decision. Large metal siding and some primers have additional limits in the data sheet. Read the full sheet for the actual job.
